What is school nursing?  These components comprise some of a school nurse’s duties:

  • Communicable disease surveillance 
  • Providing state mandated health screenings (Vision, hearing, postural, height, weight, Body Mass Index)
  • Member of student support teams (BET, 504, ISIS, Crisis, SAT)
  • Providing health counseling to students, families, and staff
  • Serving as a health resource consultant
  • Providing emergency care in case of injury or sudden illness
  • Providing medical treatments (Catheterizations, G-tube feedings, nebulizer treatments, blood glucose monitoring, medication administration, etc)
  • Case management of chronic health conditions
  • Developing and coordinating Individual Health Care Plans and 504 Accommodation Plans
  • Completing Developmental Health Histories
  • Close collaboration with other support personnel (guidance,SPED etc.)
  • Developing school system health policies
  • Data collecting for Department of Public Health statistics
  • Participating in school health related studies
  • Health Education curriculum planning 
  • Health Education team teaching or classroom resource speaker
  • Community liaison for local emergency planning
